Window and door have been widely used both in literature and in movies.

In movies, window symbolizes either the voyeur of the protagonist or the exposition of the protagonist which more often corresponds to the position of the audience as the viewer peeps what's going on on the screen. Hitchcock's Rear Window is the example.

On the other hand, despite of the symbolic meaning that film directors might impose on the door, door is often used to transit from one space to the other space. This is especially necessary in the silent movie because camera movement(dolly, pan, steady cam..etc)was not available at that time. When the audience sees the actor leaves from a door on the right side of the sceen and in next shot the actor comes out from the door on the left side of the screen, the audience knows that these two space (room) are next to each other. Therefore establish a sence of space. You can see a lot of examles in Charlie Chaplin's movies.

Of course that door has it's metaphorical meanings. NTU professor Lee Yung-Tz(?) wrote an article in Comtenporary Magazine(?) a lot time ago, you might want to check it out.

Sorry that I cannot type Chinese on my computer.
