 About
The Graduate Institute of History was established in 1993. The main goal of the Institute is to cultivate young scholars specializing in Chinese history since the Ming Dynasty and Taiwanese history. In addition to intensive study of Chinese archival material, students are required to familiarize themselves with Western classical works in these two fields. Students are encouraged to learn foreign languages, such as Japanese, English and French, so as to enrich their ability to conduct research in various fields.
The Institute has a strong faculty of full-time and part-time professors, all of whom graduated from major universities and are distinguished in their own research specialties. The Graduate Institute of History focuses on teaching and researching Chinese history since the Ming dynasty and Taiwan history since the Qing dynasty, and provides courses designed to offer a solid foundation of study in the history of cross-strait relations.
The Institute holds academic activities periodically and forms study groups to enhance students’ interest in scholarly learning. The Institute has set up the Center for the Study of Cross-Strait Relations and the Center for Ming-Qing Studies to promote related research. In addition, the Institute’s journal, Shih-Hui, has become a major journal in the field of history since its first publication in 1996.

Institute Today
The Graduate Institute of History now has 7 professors, 2 part-time professors,
3 part-time associate professors and 2 part-time assistant professors. Every year,
we recruit 13 students, include part-time student. The Institute was started in 1993,
and we had students graduated successively since 1996. So far, we already have 149 alumni.
And now we currently have 52 students in school. Furthermore, the Institute established
part-time student’s course and started recruit in 2003, which have 30 places for new
students for every year. Our part-time students graduated since 2005, until now,
we owned 188 alumni. Currently, still have 58 students in school.
Since we are an independent Institute,
so we only can have limited full-time professors. Even though we do not have enough professors
to compare with the other departments. To make up and rich our courses, we have different courses
for every semester. Moreover, to expand student’s horizon, we invite domestic and international
scholars with great achievement and give student academic discourse lecture.
To increase teaching efficiency
and achievement, we arrange historical sites investigation for every semester.
So far, we had visited Nantou, Caoling, Hsinchu, Penghu, Taoyuan, Tungkang, Tamsui and Keelung.
We also had gone to several academic institutes and Museum, such as, Taiwan Historica,
Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines, Taipei Guest House, Taipei 228 Memorial Museum
and National Taiwan Museum.

Publications
Our
Institute publishes an annual journal entitled Shih-Hui. In addition to
providing an opportunity for graduate students to practice their
writing skills, this journal also publishes academic works written by
scholars and professors.
