This four-year long project, which will be conducted at the Optical Sciences Center of National Central University, focuses on the development of devices and integrated circuits for broadband wireless access system, i.e. fiber radio. It consists of three major technology areas.

  1. Architecture and circuit design of base-band signal processor for 40 Gbps fiber communications: It includes analog RF front-end transceiver circuits and digital signal processing circuits.
  2. Millimeter-wave and optoelectronic devices and circuits: Ka-band integrated circuits and optoelectronic integrated circuits based on InP field-effect transistors and heterojunction bipolar transistors will be designed and fabricated.
  3. Micro-optical devices for broadband wavelength division multiplexing: Si-based array waveguide, echelle grating, free space grating, microlens, and couplers will be explored and realized.

There are ten faculty members in total dedicated to this project on eight specific subjects, covering device simulation, circuit design, device processing, material growth, and optical design. Such a broad spectrum of technologies developed by this team is expected to generate a great impetus to the advancements of local industry in both optical and wireless communication sectors.
