Coming to Taiwan as an NSTC-IIPP international research intern was an opportunity I had looked forward to for months. As an agriculture student from the University of the Philippines Los BaƱos (UPLB), I have always been interested in how scientific research can help address real-world environmental problems. My academic background introduced me to groundwater as an important resource for agriculture and rural communities, but I wanted to understand it beyond what could be learned from textbooks and lectures. Joining the GeoHydraulics Research Group at the Graduate Institute of Applied Geology of National Central University gave me the chance to experience research in a field that complements my discipline, while learning from scientists whose work has practical applications in land subsidence, earthquakes, and groundwater quantity and quality.
During the internship, I realized that research is rarely a straightforward process. It requires patience, careful observation, and the willingness to question results instead of immediately accepting them. Working under the guidance of my principal investigator, Professor Shih-Jung Wang, exposed me to a research environment where discussions were encouraged and every result was examined critically before drawing conclusions. As an undergraduate student, I initially found this intimidating because I was accustomed to focusing on obtaining the "correct" answer. Over time, however, I became more comfortable asking questions, seeking clarification, and appreciating that uncertainty is a natural part of scientific inquiry. This experience changed the way I approach research and strengthened my confidence as a young researcher.
The internship also broadened my perspective on the relationship between agriculture and groundwater science. While my studies at UPLB often emphasize agricultural production and soil science, my experience in Taiwan allowed me to appreciate groundwater as a dynamic geological system influenced by both natural processes and human activities. Seeing how different disciplines come together to understand these processes reminded me that many environmental issues cannot be solved from the perspective of a single field alone. It reinforced the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, something I hope to carry with me throughout my academic and professional career.
Among the many things I experienced, what impressed me most was the atmosphere within the laboratory. Although each member was focused on their own research, everyone was approachable and generous in sharing their knowledge. Questions were welcomed, ideas were openly discussed, and learning happened not only through formal supervision but also through everyday conversations with researchers and graduate students. This supportive environment encouraged me to participate actively instead of simply observing from the sidelines. It made me realize how important a positive research culture is in helping students grow, regardless of their level of experience.
