Summer Memories at Geohydraulics research lab, NCU
Looking back on my research internship at National Central University (NCU), I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude and warmth. When I first joined the Geohydraulics Research Lab under the guidance of Professor Shih-Jung Wang, I carried with me a mixture of excitement and quiet nervousness. Entering a new academic environment, working with unfamiliar groundwater datasets, and adapting to life in another country initially felt overwhelming. Yet those worries soon faded. Professor Shih-Jung Wang and everyone in the laboratory welcomed me with genuine kindness, patience, and warmth, making me feel at home from the very beginning.
Under Professor Wang’s thoughtful guidance, research gradually became a journey of discovery rather than a source of pressure. He taught us not only how to process hydrological time-series data and develop 3D geological models, but also how to think critically, ask meaningful questions, and approach scientific challenges with curiosity, patience, and confidence.
What made our laboratory experience truly special was the beautiful balance between hard work and companionship. Research can sometimes be demanding, but our weekly Sport Days were always a welcome break. We would put aside our computers, codes, and models, leave the laboratory together, and head to the campus sports courts for badminton, games, and light-hearted exercise.
On the court, language barriers and cultural differences seemed to disappear. We cheered for one another after great shots, laughed together over silly mistakes, and often stayed afterwards with cold drinks, talking about everyday life in Taiwan, our favorite foods, and our hopes for the future. Those simple moments brought us closer and gradually turned us from lab mates into close friends - and, in many ways, a little family far from home.
Our field trips were among the most memorable parts of the summer. They gave us the chance to step away from computer screens and immerse ourselves in Taiwan’s beautiful natural landscapes. We walked together along lush forest trails beneath cool, leafy canopies, breathing in the fresh mountain air and listening to the gentle rustling of leaves.
As we climbed higher, the dense forest gradually opened into sweeping views of green hills rising into the mist. Standing together at the mountain lookout, surrounded by fresh air and peaceful scenery, we captured group photos filled with youthful energy and happiness.
One of the most touching highlights of the summer was our visit to Shifen Old Street. Everyone in the laboratory gathered along the historic railway tracks, holding a bright sky lantern and carefully writing our wishes, hopes for the future, and heartfelt blessings for one another on its four sides. As the lantern was released and slowly drifted upward into the blue sky, I felt a profound sense of warmth and connection. During our trips, we also explored beautiful river valleys and crossed scenic suspension bridges, taking time to appreciate the peaceful landscapes and the simple joy of being together.
Beyond our field trips and laboratory work, I also treasured the quiet, everyday moments on the NCU campus. On sunny afternoons, I loved sitting beneath the shade of tall pine trees, looking out over the green campus, winding paths, and distant skyline. Those peaceful moments gave me a chance to slow down, reflect on everything I had experienced, and simply enjoy being there. Sometimes, it was these ordinary moments - not the big adventures - that made the experience feel especially meaningful.
My time at NCU was far more than an academic internship. It was a transformative chapter filled with learning, personal growth, friendship, and memories that I will carry with me for years to come. I am deeply grateful to Professor Shih-Jung Wang for his patient mentorship, thoughtful guidance, and encouragement throughout my research journey. I am equally grateful to everyone in the laboratory for their kindness, companionship, and for making me feel so welcome.
I came to NCU hoping to learn about groundwater research, but I left with much more: new knowledge, new friendships, greater confidence, and a collection of beautiful memories that will always have a special place in my heart.
