My Summer Internship Experience at National Central University

My summer internship at National Central University (NCU) was one of the most meaningful experiences of my university life. Before coming to Taiwan, I was excited but also a little nervous because I did not know what the research environment and daily life would be like. After spending this summer in the lab, I feel very grateful because I not only learned new knowledge but also had many memorable experiences with wonderful people.
During the internship, I learned a lot of professional knowledge, especially about groundwater and land subsidence. Through my research in Yuanchang, I learned how changes in groundwater levels can be related to land subsidence. I also learned that geological conditions, especially fine-grained materials, can affect ground deformation. In addition, I learned more about data processing, time-series analysis, geological information, and how to discuss research results. Most importantly, I learned that research is not only about getting a result. We also need to check the data carefully, understand the reason behind the result, and discuss our work with others.
Besides research, I also had many chances to enjoy Taiwanese food. I tried many different dishes and found many new flavors that I really liked. One of my favorite foods was pizza, haha! Eating together with friends after working in the lab was also a simple but happy part of my internship. These small moments made me feel more comfortable and helped me enjoy my time in Taiwan even more.
I also had the chance to visit many beautiful and interesting places. I visited Jiufen and Shifen, explored Taipei, and visited Taipei 101. I also visited several volcanic mountain areas and learned more about the natural landscape of Taiwan via field trips. These trips gave me a chance to relax after work and also helped me understand more about Taiwanese culture, nature, and daily life. Every place gave me a special memory.
Another thing I really value is the friendships I made during this internship. I met many Vietnamese students and also made friends with people from other countries. We shared food, talked about our studies, helped each other, and explored Taiwan together. Although we came from different backgrounds, it was easy to make friends because everyone was friendly and open. I believe these friendships are one of the most valuable things I will bring home from this summer.
I was also very impressed by the people in the lab. Everyone was friendly, active, and enthusiastic about research. They were always willing to help when I had questions, so I never felt alone when I had a problem. I am especially thankful to Professor Shih Jung Wang for taking care of the students so carefully. He paid attention to many details, supported us during the internship, and helped us adapt to the new environment very quickly. Because of his support and the kindness of the lab members, I could feel comfortable and become part of the lab in a short time.
Looking back, this summer internship was much more than an academic trip. It was a chance for me to learn, explore, make friends, and become more confident. I am very thankful to NCU, my professor, the lab members, and all the friends who made this summer special. I hope this experience will be a useful step for my future study and career. Most importantly, I hope I can come back to Taiwan and NCU again in the future, and maybe have another chance to learn and work with everyone. Until then, I will always remember this wonderful summer.
