My Summer Journey with the GeoHydraulics Research Group

This summer was more than just an internship. It was a journey that took me far from home, challenged me in many unexpected ways, and gave me memories that I will carry with me for a long time.
When I first joined the GeoHydraulics Research Group, I was both excited and nervous. It was my first experience working in an international academic environment, and I was worried about communicating in English and expressing my ideas clearly. However, I gradually realized that I did not need to speak perfect English. What mattered was being willing to communicate, ask questions, and learn.
During the program, I had the opportunity to investigate the relationship between groundwater and surface water levels and develop a basic hydrogeological model in Taoyuan. From data processing to cross-correlation analysis and hydraulic gradient calculations, each step helped me gain a deeper understanding of groundwater and hydrogeology. More importantly, I learned that academic work is not always easy or straightforward. There were times when I did not understand the data, could not get the expected results, or had to revise my work several times. These challenges taught me to be more patient, independent, and willing to learn from my mistakes.
Being part of the GeoHydraulics Research Group also allowed me to experience how researchers work together, exchange ideas, solve problems, and support one another. I am grateful to my professor, mentors, and other members of the group for their guidance and encouragement throughout the program.
Beyond academics, this journey gave me many meaningful experiences. I had the opportunity to participate in Sport Day with all the members of the group. Since I rarely made time for physical activities, this experience helped me realize the importance of balancing work with exercise and taking time to enjoy life. My Professor's encouragement reminded me that learning is not only about working hard, but also about staying active and enjoying meaningful moments with others.
This journey was also my first time traveling abroad and living away from home for an extended period. It gave me the opportunity to experience a completely new culture and witness the magnificent beauty of nature in another country. From everyday experiences to exploring new places, every moment broadened my perspective and helped me become more open-minded, confident, and independent.
Looking back, I realize that the most valuable things I gained were not only technical knowledge and new skills, but also new friendships, unforgettable memories, and the courage to step outside my comfort zone. One month away from home passed much faster than I expected, but it left me with experiences that I will remember for a long time.
I am sincerely grateful to Professor Shih-Jung Wang, my mentors, and everyone in the GeoHydraulics Research Group for making this summer such a meaningful chapter of my university journey.
This was not just an internship. It was a summer of learning, exploring, growing, and becoming more confident in myself.
